It seems paradoxical to write of a dry spell in the development of a great red wine. Arachon has been around since 1996. Created by the great Austria winemakers Manfred Tement, Franz Xaver Pichler and Tibor Szemes. The start was rough, the road was rocky and the wine itself was not only subject to vintage fluctuations. For a few years now, Oscar Szemes has been firmly at the helm of Arachon. Within a short time, he managed to give this blend of 80% Blaufränkisch, supplemented with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a new identity and elevate it to the Austria red wine Olympus.

René Gabriel: “During a visit to Pinkafeld, I was allowed to taste a 2019 barrel sample and was blown away (19/20). When Oscar told me about the upcoming bottling, I spontaneously ordered 100 bulk bottles. A special filling for Gabriel-Glas Switzerland. In autumn 2022, we visited the winery with a group and at the subsequent lunch, the still young 2019 Arachon flowed in pleasurable streams!”

13,5% vol., 5,6 acidity, 1,2gRZ. 80% Blaufränkisch – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot.
The grapes for Arachon come from the best sites of Mittelburgenland – slate, loam, loess. Vines up to 65 years old. Spontaneous fermentation in 500l vats, partly new for 30 months. Deep black – red rim, fine aroma play of black berries, cherries, cassis, white nougat, almond tones, blackberries, orange zest with perfectly underlaid wood, a bit of coffee, tight tannins, densely structured, Blaufränkisch influenced, spicy matching acidity, shows minerality, complexity, character, depth, length, of highest individuality, clearly Mittelburgenland. Substance for the next 20 years. A great red wine that knows how to mature.
